General Cleaning Requirements

DEGASSING

Degassing involves treating the void volume, the empty space in a vessel, to remove volatile contaminants such as H2S and benzene, allowing safe personnel entry into the vessel. Degassing follows the removal of heavy hydrocarbons, either through vapor phase or circulation processes. Once completed, blinds can be removed, and mechanical maintenance can commence.

DECONTAMINATION

Decontamination achieves degassing and also removes light volatile contaminants from metal surfaces. It also includes the removal of iron sulphide. In light end units, this process allows maintenance activities to begin. In heavy end units, the appropriate chemistry can remove deposits, enabling maintenance activities to commence.

CLEANING

Cleaning entails the removal of soluble solids, liquids, and gaseous contaminants. Entry into vessels can be made without respiratory protection, and repairs or inspection activities can start immediately.
